History has it that Malindi\u2019s ruler sent\nhis personal envoy to China with a giraffe as a gift in the Chinese fleet that\ncame with the explorer Zheng He and the Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama met\nthe Malindi Authorities then signed a trade Agreement and hired a guide for his\nvoyage to India in 1498 before he constructed the Vasco Da Gama pillar, a great\ntourist attraction in Malindi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Politically, Malindi was conquered by Sultan Majid of\nZanzibar in 1861 and turned into a slave trade centre till the end of the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\ncentury before the British Colonial Government forcefully took over its\nAdministration in 1890 hence abolishing slave trade and introduced Agriculture as\na replacement and some industries were started growing in the first half of the\n20<sup>th<\/sup> century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tourism industry in Malindi has immensely improved gaining\npopularity among the Italian tourists though its population is mostly made up\nof Muslims who occupy the coast of Kenya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tourist attractions\nin Malindi<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Malindi\nMarine National Park and Reserve<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Malindi Marine National Park and Reserve is located in the\nsouthern part of Malindi town mainly made up of fringing reefs, coral, sea\ngrass, mangroves, mudflats, high fish diversity, marine mammals, turtles, and\nshorebirds are easily spotted in the park rich in a wide range of sport\nactivities like swimming with zebra fish, windsurfing, glass bottom boat rides,\ncamping, and beach walks in the beautiful coral garden. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Vasco Da\nGama pillar<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This pillar is one of the oldest remaining monuments in\nAfrica named after the Portuguese explorer who stopped in Malindi to meet the\nMalindi Authorities for the signing of a trade Agreement and he is said to have\nhired a guide for his voyage to India in 1498.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Arabuko\nSokoke forest<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This forest covers 420 square kilometer piece of land\nbetween Kilifi and Malindi towns with a variety of butterfly species and has\nseveral snakes, all these attractions contribute greatly to the massive influx\nof tourists in Malindi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Bio\nKen snake park<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This park harbors the largest collection of\nSnakes in East Africa located a few kilometers out of Malindi town and it\ndoubles as a research centre full of reptiles like snakes and snake-bite. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Gedi\n(Gede) ruins<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gedi ruins stand just next to Malindi Marine National\nPark and Reserve protecting and preserving the historical and archeological\nfindings in museum south of Malindi town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The\nfalconry<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This place is home to several species of birds\nincluding the Eagles, Owls, Falcons and Pecker birds, among many others not\nforgetting a large tortoise of 200 years old snakes such as the Green Mamba,\nPython and Cobra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Kipepeo\n(butterfly) Project<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This place protects butterflies hatched from\nthe pupae and they are exported and displayed in insect parks worldwide. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Takwa\nruins<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Takwa ruins are the existing remains of the\n15th and 16th-century Swahili trading centre before it was abandoned in the\n17th century. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How\nto get there<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">By plane<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Malindi Airport<\/strong> is a small airport that can be reached from\nJomo Kenyatta International Airport, Wilson Airport in Nairobi, or Lamu Airport\nthen <strong>Moi International Airport<\/strong> in Mombasa, about 110 km (70 miles) away\nand it is Kenya\u2019s largest airport with flights throughout Africa, Europe and\nrecently a direct flight to America\u2019s John F Kennedy was launched.
