Aberdare National Park is located in the Aberdares which is about 15 kilometers out of Nyeri established in 1950 covering 767 square kilometers and Aberdares is an old volcanic mountain range which has lower peaks because of the erosions which lasted for long but still it offers its visitors beautiful views of Mount Kenya to the east and Great Rift Valley to the west and its unique vegetation, rugged terrain, deep ravines cutting through its forested eastern and western slopes, clear water streams and waterfalls all put together creates a beautiful scene for its visitors to enjoy with attractive peaks like the Le satima and Kinangop peaks, many waterfalls like the magnificent Karuru falls dropping from 272 meters, Zaina falls dropping from 140 meters and the Gura Falls dropping from 305 meters.
The park is also famous for the the Mau Mau Caves, Kimathi hideouts, and the Kimathi "post office" where agents of the rebellion used to drop messages for Mau Mau fighters during the guerrilla wars in the struggle for the independence of Kenya from the British Colonial Government.
Wildlife
The Aberdare National Park is home to many endangered wildlife animal species like the black rhinoceros, leopard servile, rare bongo, giant forest hog, rare wild dogs, black and white colobus monkeys, reedbuck, bushbucks, common zebra, Cape buffalo, eland, East African wild dogs, spotted hyena, Olive baboon, mole rat and mole shrew among other game.
Birds
There are an estimated 250 bird species in this park and they include Tacazze Sunbird, Golden-winged Sunbird, the emerald-green Malachite Sunbird and the tiny, double collared Sunbird, endangered Aberdare cisticola, Jackson's francolin, sparry hawk, eagles and plovers impressively attracting birders every year.

Game Viewing

Hiking from the Elephant hills to the Le satima and Kinangop peaks delivers you to the top where you watch the various waterfalls like the beautiful Karuru falls dropping from 272 meters, Zaina falls from 140 meters and the Gura Falls from 305 meters. All these are found in the Aberdares which the park derives its name from.
