Nairobi National Park is Kenya’s first park just 7 kilometers away from skyscrapers in Nairobi’s City centre with a rhino sanctuary protecting over 50 endangered rhinoceros and other wildlife animals in the park include the lions, buffaloes, elephants, cheetahs, warthogs and gazelles not forgetting over 400 bird species reported in the wetlands. The former Kenyan president Daniel Arap Moi burnt 12 tons of elephant tusks and rhino horns in 1989 to boost Kenya’s conservation image globally and today a monument stands in this historic site marking it as a famous ivory burning site.
Wildlife
This city park hosts wildlife that include the lions, leopards, rhinos, buffaloes, elephants, cheetahs, warthogs, wildebeest, elands, zebras, hippos and gazelles spotted during the game drive in the park.
Birds
There are over 400 bird species reported in the wetlands of Nairobi National Park and they include African crested cranes, African fish eagle, kori bustard, secretary bird, marabou stork, Rüppell’s vulture, martial eagle, great white pelican, Egyptian goose, hadada ibis, sacred ibis, malachite kingfisher, wagtail, yellow billed stork, go away bird, hamerkop, Madagascar bee-eater, plovers and African jacana among others. These make a great birding experience for the birders.
Activities

  • Game drives

 During the games drives the visitors may or may not view lions and leopards given their nocturnal nature but, buffalos, elephants, gazelles, zebras and rhinos easily seen grazing with the park. This is the moment you can enjoy while taking pictures.

  • Walking trails

Visitors can take nature walks within the swamps of the park to view birds in the company of the game ranger.

  • Bird watching

Birding is a popular activity here, with over 400 species recorded within the wetlands as you enjoy photography. African crested cranes, African fish eagle, kori bustard, secretary bird, marabou stork, Rüppell’s vulture, martial eagle and great white pelican are some of the bird species you will be viewing.

  • Turtle and tortoise watching

Turtle and tortoise viewing can also be enjoyed at the Nairobi Mamba village and stand a chance to hold them with your own hands and takes photos as well.

Giraffe Center
The Giraffe Centre is located at the edge of Nairobi National Park where visitors can spot the endangered Rothschild's giraffes and a Giraffe Manor with a purpose of providing conservation education to children.
David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust
It is strategically located at the entrance of Nairobi National Park and was established by Daphne Sheldrick in memory of her late husband David Sheldrick in 1977 to protect the orphaned elephant and rhino calves under the rescue and rehabilitation program.
